One of my biggest great memories as a child was coming home from school, walking into the house and smell cinnamon in the air, I knew then it was time for my mom's famous homemade cinnamon donuts! They are easy to make and a fun activity for the kids in the kitchen, delicious for an afternoon snack or for breakfast in the morning.
4 Cups of flour
4 teaspoons of Baking Powder
Pinch of salt
½ teaspoon of cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
1 Stick of butter
½ cups of whole milk
1 cup of sugar
3 whole eggs
1 Teaspoon of pure vanilla extract
Vegetable oil for frying
Additional sugar and cinnamon for rolling your donuts after fried.
approximately 50 2in donut
Mix all dry ingredients: flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg, sift them all up and set them to the side. Place the butter in the mixing bowl of an electric mixer to cream, then add the sugar and continue creaming until fluffy, followed with the eggs adding them one at a time and continue mixing, scrape the bowl and add milk a little at a time stopping to scrape the bowl every so often. This will create a soft mixture. Slowly start adding your flour mixture to your butter mix. At some point you are going have to stop using your mixer and place the dough into a flat floured surface and start mixing by hand until all your flour mixture is incorporated into the dough.
Roll the dough out to a ¼ thickness and cut your donuts with a donut cutter or a 2 inch round cookie cutter, fry them at 200°F on both sides to golden color let them drain any extra oil.
Mix your additional sugar with a little bit of cinnamon and then roll your donuts in the cinnamon sugar.
( Chef notes: if dough becomes sticky put in refrigerator to re-firm, do not add flour.)
These donuts will hold great in a plastic bag for several days. Enjoy!
